Case studies proving that a home workout routine from Recess Wellness show that a good cardio workout at home can beat a gym membership.

Corie discovered her love for surfing during a Recess program.

“The nutrition information was absolutely eye opening! Claudia has a way of imparting information that makes sense, is easy to implement, and makes you feel like she is going through it with you.” – Corie Wiren

Corie knew it was time to do something about her health. As a new mom and a graduate student it was difficult to rationalize taking time for exercise. Just like many busy people, there was always something else that took priority. Corie had never really been excited by hours on the treadmill, so when she saw the ad for Recess Beach Body Bootcamp (now called Recess Health Immersion) there was something that resonated.

“I knew I needed some inspiration and to change my habits, but it seemed like so much work. I had purchased gym memberships, but would never go. I was in need of something new to inspire me. Recess’ mission spoke to me in a way that traditional methods did not.”

Corie thought she was eating well enough until Claudia, the program’s nutritionist, discussed the female fat cell and the importance of eating a good breakfast. She realized that she didn’t just “end up” feeling unhealthy. Over time, it had been the little things that added up: the glasses of orange juice, waiting for an hour or two before eating breakfast, not eating enough whole grains and veggies.

And just as those little things has gradually chipped away at her health, through Recess’ program, Corie realized that she could just as steadily improve her health for the long haul. Corie started putting some of the suggestions she learned in the program into place. The Thursday afternoons she spent with Recess became the foundation to the sustainable changes Corie was making to improve her health.

“The nutrition information was absolutely eye opening! Claudia has a way of imparting information that makes sense, is easy to implement, and makes you feel like she is going through it with you.”

The other key component was three hours a week spent making new friends and taking part in activities like crawling across the floor pretending to be cougars (also known as the mixed martial arts/yoga practice, Budokon), running laps around the track, and reliving one of everyone’s favorite high school memories: the Presidential Fitness Test.

While this might sound like thinly veiled torture to some, Corie found that the humor, camaraderie, and Recess instructors’ accessibility made her look forward to whatever each session delivered. Recess offered a genuine community aspect to its program and a diverse exercise regimen that was an appealing alternative to the monotony of the gym.

The Beach Body Bootcamp (now called Recess Health Immersion) ended with a surf camp on the Oregon Coast. On that August Saturday filled with waves, friends, and one truly delicious vegetable hummus wrap a surfer was born, errr, made. It kindled a passion in Corie for surfing and drove the biggest change in her health. She now had the tools, the community and the motivation get out of the house and get moving every chance she had.

“I live for the weekend when I can hop on my board, paddle out, and get that rush from riding the waves. Recess has given me the tools to make real changes that are sustainable and help me to be a healthier person. I feel like I have more energy and the stamina I need to surf, keep up with my toddler, or take on whatever else the day may bring!”

Well, Corie, to that we say: Cowabunga, dude!
