Bill and Sally felt comfortable with Recess practitioners.
“With Portland winter weather the way it is the last thing you want to do is leave the house to go to the gym. Instead, we spent time in our own home with our Recess trainer, chef and nutritionist. Sessions just flew by.” – Sally Gagnier
Bill and Sally Gagnier
Bill and Sally Gagnier are like many couples on the verge of retirement. They’d led busy professional lives, raised a family and were ready to spend more of their free time with their four grandchildren, or, packing their bags to travel and see the world.
Now that they had more time they wanted to make sure that had have the good health to enjoy it. The catch is, joining a gym didn’t exactly fit into their idea of ‘enjoying life.’
“We knew we needed to find a way to stay fit but we decided we didn’t want to join a gym. We’d both done that.” says Bill, “We thought, there has to be a way to just do this at home in your sweats.”
At the same time, the Gagniers were also wondering if reading labels was enough to keep their nutrition on track. Even Bill’s training as an engineer didn’t prepare him for some of the mind-bogglingly complex ingredients listed on the packages they found in the store. That’s when they called Recess.
As part of the Partnership Transformation Package, Recess’ staff interviewed the Gagniers about their interests and abilities and performed fitness tests to create customized workout routines, nutrition lessons and healthy cooking strategies for them. The Gagniers loved that everyone they worked with took time to listen and understand their likes, dislikes and abilities and then incorporated that into their routine.
“They really tailored the workout program to our interests, “says Sally. “When Tracy found out I enjoyed hiking she gave me exercises that strengthened my quads to make hiking more enjoyable.”
Even though they ate fairly well, Claudia, the nutritionist, found a lot of small ways the Gagnier could make improvements in their diet. Jessica, the chef, followed up Claudia’s advice by helping Bill and Sally understand how to incorporate good nutrition into their cooking and shopping.
“Each of the practitioners was really an expert in their field,” said Bill. “We were impressed with how punctual, professional and friendly they were. They treated us with respect, but also pushed us to get what we wanted done.”
Just as important as the convenience of a home routine was how comfortable Recess practitioners made the Gagniers feel.
“It was very comfortable having them here. We never felt awkward around them, whereas I always felt awkward when I went to Curves or the gym,” Sally said.
Better yet the personal attention and custom nature of their training sessions proved to be an excellent value for the Gagniers.
“Since Recess we’ve had more value out of $100 worth of simple home gym equipment than we had from a membership to a gym,” says Sally.
As a result the Gagniers say that they are eating better, experiencing less back pain from old injuries, and feeling confident that their program has helped them to create a routine that will stick.
Recess practitioners even helped Sally work safely through a period where her back pain might normally have stopped her. By demonstrating proper technique her trainer explained how to stay in active recovery without performing exercises that were likely to aggravate her back.
As if doing all of that from home wasn’t easy enough, the Gagniers point out that Recess’ simple online booking program was just one more way that Recess took the hassle out of getting in good shape. No reminder cards, no mixups, just a simple paperless reservation with an email confirmation.
“It has been great to have the ability to pick across different categories of expertise. And to do it all from home has made it that much better,” says Bill.
